Aberfan : The Green Hollow
Aberfan : The Green Hollow, a drama for BBC Wales which portrays the poem written by Owen Sheers, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan tragedy.
Fifty years ago, on the 21st of October 1966, 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives after an a avalanche of coal waste crashed into a school and houses in the South Wales village of Aberfan.
The memories and pain of that fateful tragedy still linger in the South Wales mining village of Aberfan. The drama tells the deeply moving story of the worst disaster involving children in modern British history. Over a few short minutes, death and destruction were wrought over this small Welsh village. In this film, developed by BBC Wales, we see stories of tragic loss, miraculous survival and heroic rescue. It tells the heart rendering stories of the villagers race against time to rescue the survivors, many of whom were buried alive. Performed by a stellar cast including some of Wales’s best-known acting talent, including Michael Sheen, Jonathan Pryce, Sian Phillips, Eve Myles and Iwan Rheon.
Aerialworx were commissioned by BBC Wales to film with our Alexa Mini and heavy lift drone for film sequences of the actors and CJI sequences. In the 50 years since the disaster the landscape has changed dramatically. The clarity of the Images captured by the Alex Mini were ideally suited for the CJI overlay of the coal waste tips long since removed. This was essential to set the scene for this drama and the scale of the Aberfan disaster.
