The Last Shepherd
This S4C special The Last Shepherd investigates the shepherds of North Wales, Spain, France, Romania and South Tyrol. The programme gives a unique insight into the life of the last of the traditional shepherds. They follow their flocks from the lowland to the summer dwelling and back – There is considerable diversity in their stories.
The shepherds of Romania protect their sheep from wolves and the shepherds of Tyrol carry passports because they cross many boundaries. In North Wales we see sheep being shipped from Bardsey Island in late summer, and the gathering and sorting out on the Carneddau mountains in the Snowdonia National Park for the annual shearing. High on the mountains and down in the farm, we see man, dog and sheep living in a unique harmony on the wild landscape. The wild and windswept North Wales mountains are home to only the thousands of sheep but also the large herd of wild ponies that run free on the open moorland.
The remote wilderness of the landscape made for an ideal location to use the Aerialworx drone to capture fantastic footage of the annual gathering of the sheep and the wild ponies.
