One Show : Sherwood Forest Special

Attracting the imagination of Hollywood and audiences from around the world, Sherwood Forest is the legendary stomping-ground of Robin Hood. This 450 acre country park in the heart of Nottinghamshire is now part of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve and home to a fascinating eco-system. This ancient forest has 900 veteran oak trees including The Major Oak. The famous tree which, according to local legend, was Robin Hood’s principal hideout. The Major Oak is an impressive tree with an estimated age between 800 and 1,000 years old.

Since the early 19th century its massive limbs have been partially supported by an elaborate system of scaffolding. The Major Oak is of special scientific interests and is lovingly cared for by a small team of dedicated Park Rangers who ensure the welfare of the tree is maintained for future generations to enjoy. Hundreds of school children on day trips flock to see and admire this impressive tree. It’s presence brings to life the stories and legends from the past and brings a tangible sense of history from a bygone age. Teaching the children of today to respect the nature that surrounds them, which is so often taken for granted.

More Information

Now the subject for The One Show on BBC1, the programme gives an insight into the history and appeal of this unique tree which attracts thousands of visitors every year. We were asked by BBC The One Show if we had experience filming in forests and of course we did. We had previously filmed at the Cairngorms National Park, Kielder Forest, Delamere Forest, Eskrigg Nature Reserve, Penglais Nature Park, Coed Y Brenin, and the New Forest to name just a few. Even with our vast experience we still felt a real sense of respect to the fragility of this large and ancient oak tree. The Aerialworx drone set about filming a series of high level shots to show the tree standing deep within the forest. Completing the shoot with some complicated and highly intricate manouvers flying between the heavy branches of the tree to show the true magnificence of the majestic Major Oak.
